Welcome to GPS Explorer


PC Users: Mozilla Firefox browser (starting with version 52) no longer supports plugins, including the GPS Explorer time series Java applet. One option is to install 32-bit Mozilla Firefox version 51.0.1 or lower and 32-bit Oracle Java on a PC. You'll need to turn off automatic Firefox updates.

A better option is to use Internet Explorer browser version 11.

In any case, you need to add the GPS Explorer url in your Java Control Panel's Exception Site List under the Security tab:

Mac Users: You can use Chrome, Safari and Firefox 52.2.0 (ESR). Note: There is a problem accessing the Model Terms for MAC users. We are trying to fix this.

The GPS Explorer data portal provides tools to access and explore GPS data, positions, time series, velocities, and strain from continuous GPS stations covering Western North America. These data products are generated as part of a NASA MEaSURES project (see background below), and are updated weekly.

GPS Explorer contains interactive utilities for selecting sites, displaying time series, mapping velocities and viewing strain. Products such as velocities can be viewed at user-specified scales, with complementary data sets such as recent seismic activity. Options for map layers (e.g., terrain/satellite base layers, toggling fault lines) are also available.

In addition to viewing and downloading data, users can perform their own analysis of GPS time series with the same software used for products. Data can be fit using various modeling strategies (e.g., turning on/off the modeled seasonal signal). GPS positions and velocities can also be downloaded for personal modeling use.

Getting Started

Please log in or create an account via the "Login" window to the right. An account enables user settings such as map state, site groups, and modeling jobs to be saved for subsequent visits. You can also login as user/password "guest", but you may see other guest user settings.

About GPS Explorer Data Products

SOPAC GLOBK and JPL GIPSY data are combined to create the MEaSUREs combination using the JPL analyze_tseri software package. Products are available via individual applications under the "Data Products" tab once logged in, or from the lists below. Official products are listed in the ESDR table below. Products are produced in the ITRF2005 reference frame, except PBO (SNARF).

  • Time Series:   tar files are available for the MEaSUREs combination, SOPAC GLOBK and JPL GIPSY sources. These data will soon be provided in the PBO time series formats, and generated using the JPL analyze_tseri package, which improves the regional filtering procedure.
  • Velocities (ATS software) (GMT software format, e.g. lon, lat, n, e, n_sig, e_sig, [corr-currently unused], site, u, u_sig):
  • Motion Model Terms (estimated by SOPAC Refined model):  SOPAC Refined Model (MATLAB software) motion terms for all sites are in the "timeseriesModelTermsSummary.SOURCE.DATE.txt" files in the MEASURES timeseries directory on the SOPAC data archive. Analyze_tseri (ATS) software values will be provided in the near future.
  • Time Series Offsets (estimated by analyze_tseri[ATS]):   text| xml

Project Background

This project is funded through the NASA MEaSUREs program. Building on NASA's investment in the measurement of crustal deformation from continuous GPS (CGPS) networks, GPS Explorer is part of our Science Data System (SDS) to provide mature, long-term Earth Science Data Records (ESDRs) that support NASA's Earth Surface and Interiors (ESI) focus area and provide NASA's component to the EarthScope Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO).

GPS Explorer represents the web interface of the project's cyberinfrastructure. We have built upon open GIS standards, particularly those of the Open GIS Consortium (OGC), and have used the principles of Web Service-based Service Oriented Architectures to provide scalability and extensibility for new services and capabilities.
